Toast The Marshmallow

Interactive Device | Jan 2025 (3 weeks)
In Toast The Marshmallow, users attempt to toast a terrified marshmallow that's determined to escape the flames
Project Brief
_____________________________
Design an object which responds in a compelling, interesting, and emotionally-evocative way to a user interaction. This "Objects of Interactive Nonsense” challenge explores how a single, playful interaction can greatly impact how a user feels about or approaches a product or experience.

cozy campfire WITH a twist
Marshmallow slides down the stick when toasted near the fire . . .
. . . and goes back up when moved away.
design process
The process involves testing the magnet sensor, motor rotation, and Arduino coding files, as well as experimenting with the lead screw and nut mechanism within a railing for vertical motion. Various decisions are made to support a smoother interaction.

Reflection
_____________________________
• Focused on stick interaction, including signifiers, user behavior, and motion
• Learned about lead screw and nut system
• Developed emotional engagement and playful dynamics through a specific interaction
Next Steps
_____________________________
• Implement a "stop" state to mark the ends of marshmallow's motion (e.g. with buttons)
• Improve stick robustness through tighter connections and fits
• Strengthen magnet sensing for a more seamless interaction
